Out Now: The God Sun

It’s release day! My cosmic horror novelette, The God Sun is out now.

I freely admit this wasn’t a book I thought I would have written at this point in my author journey, much less actually released for people to read. I’ve had the title banging around in my mind for the last six months or so, and I thought it would become a new novel trilogy set in a completely different universe. But I couldn’t come up with any ideas for that which I really liked. Then spooky season came along and I was inspired by the Halloween spirit on social media to write a horror short story.

Admittedly again, I was really stuck when it came to my main series, and I was getting desperate to prove to myself that I could actually finish another piece of writing.

I pulled from some ideas I’d had previously for the Augment Saga, and then when I was trying to come up with a terrifying antagonist, the title I had shelved reared its head. And so, the short story project quickly became The God Sun. And then it evolved into a novelette, which is in that word-count space between a short story and a novella, between 7500 and 17,500 words. Short stories can go up to 10,000 words, so there’s a little bit of overlap there. But after editing and beta reading, I realised The God Sun absolutely needed a little bit more length to it, so it ended up just over 11,000 words.

Firmly a novelette, then.

The idea for the book cover came to me slowly, but the actual design came together in record time, and I learned a couple of new design skills along the way. I’m blown away by it.

And so, The God Sun is now out into the world for you cosmic horror fans to enjoy. I took inspiration from games like Dead Space, and movies like Event Horizon for this one, plus a random bit of ridiculous pseudoscience that I had read where some guy was saying the Sun was alive. Total nonsense in reality, but a great idea for a fictional antagonist!

A reminder that the book is quite short at 43 pages, so while being a really quick read, it’s too short to become a paperback. It’s available to purchase in ebook format. Amazon only for the time being, but I might make it wide in due course.

I really hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
