Author Interview: Frankie Sutton
Tell me a bit about yourself. Who are you and what do you write?
Howdy, I’m Frankie and autistic author from Detroit. My other creative ventures have been singing, acting, and making animated music videos (AMVs) on YouTube. You can still see those videos under Simmian7.
What’s your favourite genre? Is it the same as the one you write in?
Urban fantasy. I’m a sucker for vampires. And yes, pun was intended.
What do you do for inspiration?
My inspiration actually comes from everything around me—going outside, listening to a song, watching a movie or tv show.
How do you approach building your worlds?
Like a Lego instruction book.
What comes first? Characters or plot?
That depends on the story. Sometimes, I get a character and then think where they would fit, and vice versa.
What was the hardest thing you’ve ever had to write?
My current project, a contemporary women’s fic, having one of the scenes be authentic and flow well was a bit difficult. Luckily, a beta reader pointed me toward a website I could use as reference.
What’s your favourite/least favourite thing about the writing process?
Typing it out. I know we have voice to text programs, but I wasn’t into also having to say the punction in the past. If only we had the technology to get the words from our brains straight onto the screen.
Are you able to share any short snippets from the cutting room floor?
The opening from an earlier draft of Vampiric Crush (now available on Amazon). Definitely info-dumpy. LOL
Shae Taizer felt the sun’s heat on her fabric armor, as she crouched low among some bushes. She could smell the stale air while she spied on two warriors in a duel. As much as she wanted to jump into the fray, she was more keen to maintain her self-imposed task of only using stealth to obtain 100% victories on her 730 th consecutive day here this realm.
This realm was known as Battle Realm. A planet the size of Earth, only accessible by those with the advanced magical ability or large mechanical equipment to create portals. Battle Realm presented easily accessible environments for testing various skills in a literal life or death match. Battle Realm had no native inhabitants—only visitors. Distant shouts from others engaged in fierce battle, the din of clashing weapons or a random explosion rang in her ears. The air reeked of death and stale sweat. The vast land was riddle with bodies of those that failed to protect themselves.
What is your absolute favourite piece of your own writing? Could be a short scene, a bit of dialogue, a character or even the tiniest piece of worldbuilding.
Creating the prophecy for Vampiric Crush gave me such a rush. You can see it in Book Trailer format on my website: creatorfrankie.com
What are you promoting at the moment?
The two books I have available: Vampiric Crush and Trembles of the Heart.
And in current pitch events, I’m sharing my women’s fic project on my socials (links below).
